HUSKIES THREE PEAT AT PROVINCIALS

Huyen Le continued her historic season at the OCAA Provincial Championships. Le and teammate Anh Hoang finished first and second in Women's Singles at Conestoga College. Thanks to their stellar performances, the women took home their third straight provincial title.

After being named OCAA Women's Badminton Player of the Year, All-Canadian and East Regional All-Star, Le walked through all competition to capture the gold medal in Women's Singles. She won all five round-robin matches before taking down Georgian College's Jessica Maher in the semi-finals to set up an all Husky final against Hoang. Le recorded her first Provincial gold medal with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-11) victory. The first-year standout did not drop a single set the entire tournament.

The defending champion in Women's Singles, Anh Hoang, earned a silver medal. Other than Le, Hoang defeated all other competitors to advance to the CCAA National championship. The third-year student has now captured three medals at the Provincial stage. She will attempt to build off her silver medal performance at last year's National Championship in a couple of weeks.

Areej Shalwani kept the momentum going from his gold medal run at Regionals. The third-year Mechanical Engineering student went 3-2 in round-robin play to earn a spot in the final four. He then dropped a close match to Conestoga College's Pranav Satheesh in the semi-finals. Shalwani was unable to take home the bronze medal dropping a close 2-1 (14-21, 21-9, 13-21) decision to UTM's Runze Chen.

Diana Bosco and Fiona Kwan fought very hard but were unable to get out of the round-robin stage.

Next: Le and Hoang will represent the Huskies at the CCAA National Badminton Championship in three weeks at UTM.
