HUSKIES OFF TO REGIONALS

HUSKIES OFF TO REGIONALS

The Huskies Indoor Soccer teams are heading to Redeemer College in Ancaster to compete at the Indoor Soccer Regionals with spots at the OCAA Provincial Championships on the line. The top two teams in each pool will advance to Provincials, which will be hosted by George Brown College on March 30th-31st. The men are scheduled to play three matches on Tuesday, March 8th while the women will play the next day on Wednesday, March 9th.

The men’s team has a rich tradition of excellence in indoor soccer having won the gold medal in two of the last three championships, including the last one in 2019. The program has also claimed a medal in five straight indoor soccer championships between 2014 to 2019. Before the 2020 championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Huskies were in a great position to extend the streak with a spot in the semifinals.

The team has 12 players from the 2021 OCAA silver medal outdoor soccer team that are travelling to Ancaster, Ont. The three opponents in their pool are the St. Lawrence Surge, Laurier Golden Hawks, and Redeemer Royals.

The women's program has continued to develop and is poised to continue their success this year. The team has qualified for the last three OCAA indoor soccer championships. The team's roster includes 14 players from the outdoor soccer season competing at Regionals. The three opponents in their pool are the Sheridan Bruins, Sault Cougars, and St. Clair Saints.

Players to Watch

#6 Steve Knezevic (men’s soccer)
The second-year midfielder and captain of the Huskies is the player to watch for the Huskies. He controls the match's pace and is spectacular in all facets of soccer. His leadership and calm demeanor are massive reasons why a young Huskies squad didn’t just medal at Provincials for outdoor soccer but qualified for the program’s first CCAA National Soccer Championship.

#79 Sydney Crowe (women’s soccer)
The goalkeeper joined the outdoor soccer team ahead of the 2021 playoffs, and she didn’t wait long to make an impact. She helped propel the Huskies to the program’s first crossover playoff victory since returning to competition in 2013. She followed that performance by almost single handily taking down the OCAA Champions Fanshawe Falcons with 14 saves. The Huskies ultimately fell 1-0 in extra time. Her presence and abilities will be critical if the team wants to advance to the Provincial Championships.
