For the first time in program history, the George Brown Huskies men's soccer team competes at the CCAA National Championship. This year, the SAIT Trojans are hosting the eight teams across the country in Calgary, Alberta.

Their quarter-final opponents, the Douglas Royals, defended their title with a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Island University Mariners in the gold-medal game. The Royals finished atop of the PACWEST standings in the regular season with a 5-3-1 record. After dropping their first three games to open up the season, the Royals have put together a 6-0-1 undefeated streak since September 25th. They have outscored their opponents 16 to 3 in that span.

This is Douglas' second time competing at the CCAA National Championship in the last two seasons. In 2019, they fell to the host, Durham Lords, 3-1 and finished fourth overall.

A Royals' key player to watch for is forward Yianni Siafakas. He finished second amongst all PACWEST leading scorers during the season with five goals in eight games. He also recorded the game-winner in the gold medal match. He has already been named a PACWEST Conference All-Star and Top Forward in the playoffs.

The Huskies experienced their best result at the OCAA Championship since 2007 after claiming the silver medal. Thanks to that performance, they qualified as the wildcard team at the championship. In addition, George Brown has won three of their last four matches, at the time, two of which were victories against CCAA Top 10 ranked teams.

"We are so excited to keep the momentum going and finish the season to the best of our ability," head coach Johnny Williams explained. "To prepare properly, we need to watch some film on the positive things and the things we need to do better. Then, total commitment and focus will be necessary."

Players to Watch

#9 Yonis Jama
From day one, the first-year forward has been a consistent threat for the Huskies offence. He has tallied six goals throughout the 2021 campaign and was named an OCAA Championship All-Star for his impressive play.

#1 Aubrey Lowe
Since being put on the field in the playoffs, Lowe has arguably been the Huskies most essential player. His soccer IQ, athleticism and calm demeanor helped the team claim their first silver medal since 2007 and the program's first berth at the CCAA National Championship.

The Huskies will play at least two matches in Alberta. If they lose, they still have an opportunity to play for the bronze medal.
