GEORGE BROWN DROPS CLOSE AFFAIR

The George Brown Huskies men's volleyball team dropped the first match of 2020 falling 3-1 (21-25, 17-25, 25-22, 19-25) to the Fleming Knights on Saturday afternoon at St James Athletic Centre.

Notable Stats: Second-year middle blocker Franstelle PeBenito posted a team-high 12 points on 11 kills and a block. He also recorded an impressive hit percentage of .647 in the match.

Second-year right-side hitter Vivek Mathimakki put up double-digit points as well with 11 off nine kills and two aces. First-year setter Grayson Engelman led the team with 16 assists in the match.

How It Happened: After the Knights jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage in the opening set, the Huskies fought back to get within a single point, trailing 22-21. Unfortunately, Fleming recorded the next three points to take the set 25-21.

The back-and-forth continued in the second set with the Huskies down 16-13, but the Knights flexed their muscles again going on a 9-4 run to capture the set 25-17.

George Brown did not give up despite trailing 2-0. When the score was tied up at 12-12 in the third set, the Huskies exploded on an 8-1 run to ultimately win the set 25-22.

The Huskies were within striking distance to force a fifth and final set down 18-16, but the magic ran out. The Knights recorded seven of the next 10 points to win the set and match.

The two schools hold the same record now at 6-4, which puts them in a tie for fourth in the East division.

Up Next: The Huskies hit the road on Wednesday night, January 15, to take on the Durham Lords. First serve is scheduled for 8 pm.
