HUSKIES ARE OFF TO PROVINCIAL QUARTER-FINALS

The George Brown Huskies women’s basketball team is heading back to the Final Eight after taking down the Mohawk Mountaineers 79-62 at Casa Loma Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Notable Stats: Zae Sellers came out to play in possibly her last collegiate game. She drilled a game-high 29 points while adding six rebounds, six assists and four steals in the victory.

Head coach Warren Williams believes Sellers is the perfect player to have on a roster for various reasons.

“In my opinion, she is the best basketball player in the league, she is just terrific. It's not just the scoring and the defence, it’s just her presence on the team is tremendous,” coach Williams explained. “There is no better player in our league than Zae because of all the things she does on and off the court. I have the utmost confidence in her to lead our team next weekend to some success.”

Second-year forward Victoria Lawrence filled up the stat sheet posting 15 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, four assists and two blocks, while fourth-year forward Coco Sauve chipped in with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: The Huskies got off to a slow start in front of their home crowd. They shot under 23% in the opening quarter compared to Mohawk’s 50% to trail 17-10 after the first 10 minutes. George Brown did respond in a big way. Sellers and Lawrence recorded a combined 18 points to help the Huskies go on a 28-12 run to head into halftime up 38-29.

The women came out a bit slow offensively but still led 55-48 heading into the fourth quarter. From that point on the veteran Sellers took over. She accounted for 12 of the team’s 24 points in the quarter to punch the Huskies’ ticket to the quarter-finals at St. Clair College next week.

Despite George Brown’s slow start, coach Williams was not too worry about it.

“I think we were nervous to start the game; that is why I did not want to call a timeout. I wanted us to play through it and understand what the playoffs are like, but keep doing the things we talked about. We talked about playing hard, playing smart, playing together and doing us. We stuck to that and eventually we showed our true colours,” he said.

The Huskies battle the host team, St. Clair Saints in the Provincial quarter-finals on Friday, March 6th at 8:00pm. Veteran point guard Sellers thinks the team just needs to play together.

“I want to see the same thing I saw tonight. We must stay together. We are a completely different team when we stay together,” Sellers stated. “Just like tonight, it is nothing extraordinary, we stay together, play hard, play how we are supposed to play, do what we are supposed to do and everything will fall into place.”
