HUSKIES TAKE FIRST WIN OF 2020 IN OVERTIME

The George Brown College women's basketball team started the New Year on the right foot with a 81-77 overtime victory over the Centennial Colts on Friday night at the Casa Loma Athletic Centre.

Notable Stats: Zae Sellers posted a game-high 28 points, while teammate Victoria Lawrence filled the stat sheet with 27 points, 17 rebounds and seven steals in the victory. The two combined for 55 of the team's 81 points on the night.

Former Husky Janai Menzes recorded a team-high 16 points and five rebounds for the Colts.

How It Happened: The Huskies offence came out a bit slow in the first quarter, but because of their up-tempo defence, they only trailed 17-16 after 10 minutes.

The back-and-forth continued between the two squads in the second. Lawrence dropped five of her 10 first-half points to keep the Huskies within striking distance. The Colts led 36-30 at the half.

George Brown kicked their offence into gear as they started the third quarter on an 11-4 run to take a one-point advantage early on. Lawrence continued her strong play drilling 11 points in the frame, but the Colts had the slim 51-50 lead heading into the final quarter.

The teams kept exchanging blows. Even when the Huskies made it a two-score game late, the Colts responded. In final 90 seconds, Centennial hit back-to-back threes to tie the contest up at 68-68. The first game of 2020 needed overtime to decide a winner.

Sellers took over in the extra frame recording seven of the team's 13 points to help the Huskies pick up the victory.

Even with the big win to start the calendar year and improving their record to 7-2, head coach Warren Williams believes there are still aspects to work on. "I think defensively we still have a ways to go as far as communicating, being able to apply pressure and sometimes we aren't necessarily doing the things that we want to do."

The Huskies have 11 days off until their next game, when they travel to Durham to battle the Lords on Tuesday, January 21st. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
