HUSKIES SOCCER WELCOMES BROOMER

The George Brown Huskies Women’s Soccer program is pleased to announce the addition of goalkeeper Victoria Broomer for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.

“I chose to commit to George Brown College because the school was relatively close to home, they had the program I was interested in, and GBC has a good soccer team that competed well last season, which was also an important factor for me,” Broomer explained.

Broomer joins the Huskies from Pickering FC of League 1. She has been a goalkeeper for almost her entire soccer career. Her resume includes playing for U16 Ajax CSL and Whitby’s U17 OPDL team.

"Having a top-notch goalkeeper on the field makes a massive difference for the team's confidence in head coach Leslie Fitzpatrick’s mind.  “The goalkeeper is one of the most important positions on a soccer team, and in Victoria, we have one of Ontario Youth Soccer’s finest and most promising goalkeepers,” head coach Fitzpatrick explained. “We have always been challenged in this department until we got the brilliant Sydney Crowe this past season, and it made a massive difference. Victoria gives us the quality and stability we need in attaining someone to lead us as the last line of defence. We are ecstatic to have her.”

The women’s outdoor soccer team made history in 2021. After going 2-4 to qualify for the playoffs, they won the program's first crossover playoff match since they rejoined the OCAA in 2013 by taking down the Centennial Colts 2-1. The head coach believes Broomer will help the team build off that impressive campaign.

“I expect Victoria to step in and have an influential role in how we perform as a team. The confidence from having an elite shot-stopper is truly inspirational, as we saw this year. We expect Victoria to keep up the momentum we built and help us challenge for some awards and accolades next season,” Fitzpatrick explained.

The Oshawa, Ont., native will be enrolled in the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program this fall. She's excited to get started on the pitch and in the classroom.

“I hope to further expand my knowledge and understanding of the game while on the field. I look forward to working with new people and learning how the team works and their style of play,” she explained. “In the classroom, I look forward to learning the building blocks and skills needed to go into carpentry.”
