LAU AND KARPOVNIKOVA NAMED 2ND TEAM OCAA VOLLEYBALL ALL-STARS

The George Brown women’s volleyball program continues to make strides in the right direction, and it was recognized at the awards banquet hosted by Canadore College on Wednesday night. Ashley Lau and Alina Karpovnikova earned second-team OCAA East Division All-Star honours.

Outside hitter Lau took a big step in her second year with the Huskies. She improved in almost every statistical category this season. She impacted the game in various ways and the stats back it up. She recorded 43 service aces (fifth in Ontario), 437 total attacks (thirteenth), 110 total kills (twenty-ninth), 1.75 kills per set and 2.5 points per set.

Similar to Lau, middle blocker Karpovnikova made significant strides this campaign. She saw an increase in kills per set (1.96), points per set (2.4), total attacks (235), total kills (104) and total points (129). She was one of the most efficient players at the net in the province posting the seventh-highest hitting percentage at .298.

Lau and Karpovnikova have played key roles in helping turn around the women’s volleyball program the past two years. The Huskies posted a program-best 11-7 record during the regular season, which allowed them to host their first crossover playoff match since the program was inaugurated in 2006-2007. This came after George Brown qualified for their first-ever OCAA crossover playoff match the previous year.
