The Huskies historic season came to an end on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 13-25, 18-25) decision to the Mohawk Mountaineers in their first-ever home crossover playoff match.
Notable Stats: Left-side hitter Ashley Lau posted a team-high seven points off six kills and a block, while middle blocker Beatriz Vilches chipped in with five points on four kills and an ace.
Third-year setter Jasmin Walia led the way for George Brown with a team-high 17 assists in the match.
How it Happened: The Huskies were a tad nervous in the opening set, and it showed. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 13-3 advantage. The home team regained their composure in the later parts of the set putting together a 10-4 run but could not fully get back into it. Mohawk took the opening set 25-16.
George Brown looked more comfortable in the second set going point for point with Mohawk as the score sat at 8-8. Unfortunately, Mohawk rallied off a 17-5 run to snag the second set 25-13.
Once again, in the early parts of the set, the Huskies and Mountaineers went toe-to-toe with the score at 19-16. Mohawk though was too much for George Brown to handle on Saturday as they dropped the third and final set 25-18.
Despite the loss, this was a successful season for the Huskies. They posted a program-best 11-7 record during the regular season, which led them to host their first crossover playoff match since the program was inaugurated in 2006-2007. Third-year head coach Daphne Choi was very proud of her team and knows this is only the beginning.
"At the end of the day, we met our goals. We said we wanted to see a slow improvement throughout the season, and we wanted to peak at this time, which we have. So I think there is nothing to regret. We achieved everything we wanted to achieve," Daphne explained. "To be honest, we are just setting the stones for next season. We don't lose a lot in terms of graduating players, and we have some recruits coming in. So for us, it's just going to be about continuing to build those blocks to be successful in the future."
