Shalwani had himself a heck of a tournament at the 2020 OCAA Badminton East Regional Championships in Barrie, Ont., over the weekend.
The third-year Mechanical Engineering student went undefeated, 5-0, and captured the gold medal in Men’s Singles. Shalwani did not drop a single game on his way to the final. In the final match, he took down Seneca’s Akara Chooprawao in three games (21-17, 19-21, 21-11) to win his first career medal. Thanks to his stellar performance, he qualified for the OCAA Provincial Championships at Conestoga College in two weeks.
Victoria Lawrence (Women’s Basketball)
Lawrence was fabulous on Friday night against the province’s #1 ranked women’s basketball team in the Algonquin Thunder. The second-year transfer from Algonquin was just shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals to help hand the Thunder their first loss of the season.
The Huskies were down by 20 points, 46-26, at the half. Lawrence kicked started the comeback, generating a 7-0 run on her own in the first two minutes of the third quarter. George Brown built off the momentum to erase the deficit and take the contest 72-63 at Casa Loma Athletic Centre.
