HUSKIES BATTLE IT OUT AT PROVINCIALS

HUSKIES BATTLE IT OUT AT PROVINCIALS

The George Brown Huskies indoor soccer teams will not only compete at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships, but will also host between March 30th-31st at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. The men are looking to defend their crown, while the women have big plans first with the round-robin, then beyond.

As the last team to win it in 2020, and the 2021 Championships cancelled due to the pandemic, the men are technically the defending champions. At Regionals, the Huskies walked through all competition going undefeated 3-0, while outscoring their opponents 13-0.

Second-year midfielder Steve Knezevic led the offence netting four goals. First-year midfielder Mark-Luis Do Coito chipped in with two markers to help the team claim the top seed.

The Huskies are pencilled in Pool B with the Seneca Sting, Sault Cougars and Durham Lords. The program is currently on an unprecedented streak. If they defend their title, it will mark their third Provincial Championship in the last four seasons.

The women are also coming off a great showing at Regionals. They picked up a point in every match, going 1-0-2 (W-L-D). The biggest strengths for George Brown is their defence and goaltending. They only surrendered two goals throughout those matches to advance to Provincials.

The Huskies are in a tough Pool B with the Humber Hawks, Seneca Sting and Conestoga Condors. George Brown will rely on their defence to slow down the high-power offences in their group. Goalkeeper Sydney Crowe will be crucial for the team during round-robin play.

Offensively, the Huskies will rely on their overall depth. First-year midfielder Jennifer Seguin and first-year forward Gabriela Dias both found the back of the net twice during Regionals.

Both teams will play three round-robin matches on Wednesday with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the semifinals the following day.
