PAIR OF NATIONAL SILVER MEDALS CAP SUCCESSFUL 2018/19 CAMPAIGN FOR HUSKIES BADMINTON

A highly successful 2018-19 badminton season came to a close on Saturday afternoon in Nova Scotia at the CCAA National Championship with the Huskies earning a pair of silver medals and two fourth-place finishes to wrap the season. This is in addition to the Huskies standout performance at the provincial championship a couple of weeks ago, when George Brown won both the men's and women's team titles for a second consecutive season, earning two provincial gold medals, two provincial silver medals and a provincial bronze medal.

George Brown went into Saturday's action at nationals with an opportunity to come home with as many as four national medals, but they were unable to carry the momentum from two impressive days of action. After going a combined 18-6 on Thursday and Friday to put themselves in position to medal in each discipline, the Huskies went 0-4 on the final day of play.

It was women's singles player Anh Hoang and the mixed doubles duo of Mike Ra and Angeline Alviar who earned the pair of national silvers. Hoang went 5-1 in round-robin and semi-final play before falling to Eyota Kwan in the finals, while Ra and Alviar were 5-1 as well before dropping the gold medal match to Desmond Wang and Takeisha Wang. It marks Hoang's second consecutive national silver medal, while Ra improved on his national bronze in mixed doubles.

Reigning national silver medallist Ace Zeng saw a standout season come to an end with a tight loss to Narayan Ramdhani in the bronze medal match, while the men's doubles pairing of Eric Kern and Alex Chao fell to Arpit Taneja and Ayubu Touray to fall just short of bronze. Both had been excellent up until their final matches, with Zeng sitting at 5-1 and Chao and Kern 3-3.

On the season, Huskies badminton earned a total of two national and five provincial medals, continuing to prove themselves among the strongest badminton programs in the country.
