The George Brown Huskies women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the road last weekend. They dropped a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 21-25) decision to the Algonquin Thunder on Friday before shutting out the La Cite Coyotes 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) less than 24 hours later.
The Huskies battled hard against one of the top teams in the Thunder. Outside hitter Alina Karpovnikova led the way for the road team with a team-high 12 points on five kills, six blocks and an ace. Angelique Agustin chipped in with nine points off five kills, three blocks and an ace. Libero Jessica Barrios posted 14 digs in the match.
Head coach Daphne Choi was impressed by Barrios' play throughout the match. "Our player of the game was captain Jessica Barrios who played her career-best as Libero. We were willing to cover so much ground and never let up on blocks or on digging. We came out firing in the first set and challenged our opponents at every rally."
The Huskies made sure to end the weekend on a high with a shutout win over La Cite. This time the team was led by outside hitter Megi Memcaj, who posted a team-high nine points on eight kills and a block while adding 10 digs. Middle blocker Beatriz Vilches was right behind her with seven points off four aces and three kills. Nine different players recorded a point for George Brown in the match.
Left-side hitter Ashley Lau was a specular defensively over the weekend. She posted a career-high 20 digs against Algonquin and followed it up with a team-high 19 digs less than 24 hours later.
The team's overall depth was on full display in the match. "Every Husky saw court time, and we made no substitutions-all game. We were able to use the game to improve on specific skills we'd focused on all week, serving and blocking," Choi explained. "Even when the Coyotes tried to battle back, the Huskies showed a true team effort, everyone contributing to the quick three-set win."
Overall the head coach was very pleased by her team during the road trip. "I was extremely proud of our efforts this weekend! We set out at the beginning of the season to keep getting better at every opportunity, and to take every chance to attack the game. I'm super happy that we're right on track with where we wanted to be on this point. We're looking to close out the short remainder of the season with this moment."
After the weekend, the Huskies hold the fifth spot in the East with a 9-6 record.
