VOLLEYBALL TEAMS CLOSE OUT FIRST SEMESTER WITH WINS

Huskies volleyball setter hits ball

The Huskies Women's Volleyball team got back into the win column with a solid 3-set victory over the Centennial Colts on Wednesday in its semester finale at the St James Athletic Centre.

George Brown wasted no time, coming out of the gates in dominant fashion taking the first set 25-9. The second set would see the Colts find a stride and come on strong, but could not hang on against what looked to be a very at ease and confident Huskies squad who came out with the 25-22 set win.

All 10 Huskies players saw court time and contributed on the scoresheet, which demonstrates the depth that this continuously improving team now consistently brings to the table. A team that is being challenged every week by its coaching staff to find ways to keep developing.

"This week we told our athletes that doing "your best" doesn't mean pushing yourself to your breaking point. We said it meant being the best version of you that is possible today.", explained Head Coach Daphne Choi. "They challenged themselves with each practicing a new skill in real game situations. And even though they were asked to try new and uncomfortable things, they were able to win the game in 3 straight sets."

The Huskies closed the game out in the third set, taking it 25-16 in front of the home court crowd for a quick 3-0 win (25-29, 25-22, 25-16) and a 5-4 regular season record going into the holiday break. A break and down time that Choi is not taking for granted.

"For the first time in as many seasons as I can remember, the Huskies finished the first semester over .500. We're continuously getting better and making waves with our program. Our holiday training involves very specific training for some of our priorities which will help us start 2020 with a bang. I'm very excited!", said Choi.

Second year Early Childhood Education major Jessica Barrios once again had a solid performance for the Huskies, finishing the game with eight kills on 19 attacks (2 errors) and seven digs. She has already nearly matched all of her major statistics from 2018-19 in only a half season of play so far this year.

On the Men's side of the evening the Huskies would also make relatively quick work of the Colts, downing the visitors in three straight sets (27-25, 25-18, 25-13). The entire team was incredibly efficient on the evening, limiting themselves to only six errors while the Colts logged 21.

The Huskies converted 30 kills on 56 total attacks for an attack percentage of .429, compared to a negative rating for the visitors. Vivek Mathimakki led all scorers with 13 points (nine kills, four service aces). The George Brown Men finish the first half of the regular season with a 6-3 record (3rd place East).

The Huskies regular season will resume at home against Fleming College on Saturday January 11th, 2020.
