CROSS COUNTRY HEADS TO PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Huskies cross country runner in race

On October 26th, the George Brown College Cross Country team will make its way to Windsor, ON to compete in the OCAA Provincial Championship hosted by St. Clair College.

With a team made up of all but one returning athlete from 2018, head coach Nelson Njeru is looking for his Huskies group to hit the line and be as competitive as possible against a strong OCAA field.

"This year we will be represented by a small team, challenging themselves against other colleges while acting as strong representatives for George Brown", said Njeru. "Perhaps the most exciting new Huskies runner will be Milana Shaplavska, an international student who finished 23rd at the Centennial invitational meet. Milana will challenge for an opportunity to gain a berth to the national championship if she finishes in the Top 25."

Angelee Weathers, a multiple CCAA national championship competitor and fourth year veteran, is the anchor of this young Huskies group. Hampered by a lingering stress fracture injury from last season, Weathers has shown strength and determination in maintaining a form that will allow her to represent GBC one more time as a senior this weekend and push for another nationals appearance to add to her running resume.

Another bright spot in this year's season was the emergence on the scene of Kenzie Osborne. Osborne finished in the Top 10 of all her races with an average 6km race time of 25.56, including a fifth place finish at the Fleming Invitational to start the year. Due to an academic placement that conflicts with the provincial championship weekend, she unfortunately will be unable to lace up for the Huskies in Windsor.
