ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Badminton player Ace Zeng and women's volleyball outside Ashley Lau have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 6th.

Zeng put together an awe-inspiring performance at the OCAA Badminton Championships. He captured his second career OCAA gold medal in Men’s Singles after defeating Seneca’s Kunal Sokar in the finals. The fourth-year player also earned a spot in his third career CCAA National Championships, which will be hosted by NAIT College in Edmonton, Alta., in the process.

He went undefeated, 4-0, in group play to earn a bye to the semifinals on Day 1 of the OCAA Championships. Then, in an epic back-and-forth semifinal match against fellow Husky, Sartha Arora, the 2018 OCAA Badminton Player of the Year came away with a 21-16, 21-16 victory to advance to the final.

What’s even more impressive about his run is he didn’t drop a single set the entire championship. His play also helped the Huskies tie the Seneca Sting for the Men’s team title.

Zeng has now collected two OCAA gold medals and one OCAA silver medal in his career. The 2018 CCAA silver medalist is looking for his first career CCAA National gold medal.

Lau was the definition of an all-around player in the team’s final two matches of the regular season. The third-year outside hitter tallied a total of 29 points on 23 kills, five service aces and a block, as well as making an impact defensively with an unbelievable 27 digs in the pair of matches.

In the Huskies first match against the Algonquin Wolves, Lau recorded 13 points on 13 kills while posting a match-high 14 digs. She followed up that performance less than 24 hours later with a team and season-high 16 points from 10 kills, five service aces and a block. Once again, she played a critical role on the defensive side, registering 13 digs in the shutout victory over the La Cite Coyotes. It also marked the fourth time she hit double-digits in her last five matches in digs.
