The Huskies basketball season came to an end as they fell 74-66 to the St. Clair Saints in the quarter-finals of the OCAA Provincial Championship on Friday night.
Notable Stats: Second-year forward Victoria Lawrence posted a team-high 17 points, four steals, and four rebounds. In her final collegiate game, point guard Zae Sellers registered 16 points, four steals, four assists and three rebounds.
Fourth-year forward Coco Sauve chipped in with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
How it Happened: The Huskies got off to a slow start offensively in front of the Saints home crowd. The team went 5-of-30 from the floor in the first two quarters but only trailed St. Clair College 31-18 at halftime.
The Huskies team that came out of the locker room was the complete opposite. The team outscored the Saints 25-13 to head into the fourth quarter only trailing 46-43.
At one-point, George Brown was down as much as 16 points and fought back to find themselves tied at 48 with eight minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the Saints kept coming up with big shots when it counted. The home team rallied off a 14-4 run right after the Huskies tied it and that is all they needed to advance to the semi-finals at the OCAA Provincial Championship.
Despite the loss, fourth-year head coach Warren Williams was very proud of his team for the effort they displayed.
“I think we started to play the way we wanted to play from the start in the third quarter. We were a little nervous coming out with the big environment and the great crowd. In the third we started to do the things we wanted to do,” Williams stated. “We showed a tremendous amount of grit and heart fighting back. We just did not have enough.”
Looking back on this season Williams knows this can be the start of something special.
“Obviously tonight we will be a bit down, but it’s definitely a season to be celebrated. When I took over at George Brown, we really struggled, but we have gotten to a point of being a true contender now,” he said. “We just need to continue to grow into a team that can be a force on this level.”
