HUSKIES END SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE

The George Brown Huskies women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Seneca Sting 73-50 in the season finale on Friday night.

NOTABLE STATS: The Huskies offence started slightly slow in the opening quarter. They shot 30% from the field, while Seneca went 43.8%, but George Brown only found themselves down 20-17 after the first quarter. The backcourt of Thorin Pangan and Mariam Konate brought the team back into it. The duo combined for 12 points in the second quarter to give the Huskies the slight 33-30 advantage at halftime.

The back and forth continued out of the locker room as George Brown led 45-40, heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the Huskies erupted thanks to Pangan, Konate and Kayana Granger. They assisted the Huskies to outscore the Sting 28-10 in the frame to pick up the victory.

Second-year guard Konate put up a career and game-high 25 points while adding five rebounds and a steal. In her final home game of her Huskies career, second-year guard Pangan dropped a career-high 22 points. She was extremely efficient, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, 7-for-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also recorded five rebounds and two assists in the victory.

Second-year forward Kayana Granger chipped in with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds while adding a career-high four blocks and two steals on the night.

UP NEXT: The Huskies (3-5) finished fifth in the East Division, which means they qualified for the playoffs. The team will travel in their first-round match on Wednesday, March 9th. Stay tuned to find out George Brown's opponent and time.

 

2022 Women's Basketball Graduating Student-Athletes 

Before the game, the Huskies honour five graduating student-athletes and all of them made an impact on the program during their time here.

"All of these student-athletes brought a lot of leadership and encouragement to the team," head coach Omari Wiltshire explained. "Going through a pandemic, it's been tough, but they all worked extremely hard and made a lasting impact on this program."

#8 Geena Frew 
Frew joined the program back in 2019 and brought enthusiasm and commitment to the team. Her efforts were recognized, especially off the court, as she earned the Kimchan Fitness Award in 2020 for her commitment in the weight room. The Oakville, Ont., native has also excelled in the classroom throughout her three years at George Brown College. She was named a 2019-20 OCAA All-Academic and achieved Honour Roll status in all of her semesters of studies to date.

She played in 17 career regular-season games during her time with the Huskies. She will be graduating from the Clinical Methods in Orthotics/Prosthetics program. 


#9 Meeko Thomas 
She joined the Huskies women's basketball team ahead of the 2021-2022 season. So far this season, she has started in three of the seven games while averaging 4.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and a steal per game. She will be graduating from the Entrepreneurship Management post-grad program.  


#10 Thorin Pangan
 
Pangan was a part of head coach Omari Wiltshire's first recruiting class ahead of the 2020-21 season. The point guard has been extremely impressive in her first collegiate season averaging 10 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, while starting in every game this season.

She will be continuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Ryerson University come the fall.

#13 Geneve Biollo 
She was a part of head coach Omari Wiltshire's first recruiting class ahead of the 2020-21 season. So far, the guard she has played in six games this season, while 6.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. She will be graduating from the Fashion Techniques and Design program.


#15 Carolina Rebolledo
She joined the Huskies ahead of the 2020-2021 season. So far, the forward he has started in all six games this season, while 5.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and just under a steal per game. She will be graduating from the Business – Human Resources program.
