HUSKIES TAKE DOWN COUGARS

HUSKIES TAKE DOWN COUGARS

The George Brown Huskies women's soccer team edged out the Sault Cougars with a 2-1 win at Superior Heights Turf Field on Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED: A hard-fought first half saw the Huskies and Cougars get their first share of chances. It was not until George Brown's Jennifer Seguin put the team on her back in the 12th minute to break the deadlock. The first-year midfielder grabbed the ball near the sideline, made a nice move around a Cougars defender and made a beautiful strike over the goalkeeper just outside the 18-yard box to open the scoring

Sault responded in the 26th minute, thanks to Leah Thomas. She got behind the defence and made no mistake in the play.

The 1-1 tie continued deep into the match until the very end. The Huskies coaching staff decided to move Brianna Samuels-McLaughlin from defence to forward at halftime, and it paid off. She generated numerous chances in the second half and finally broke through in the final minutes. From the backline, Danielle Montecinos sent a superb lob over everyone's heads, and it allowed Samuels-McLaughlin to get a step on a defender. From there, she ran the ball down the field, made a move around the goalkeeper and scored in the 86th minute. The team picked up a valuable three points with the victory.

UP NEXT: The Huskies hit the road again on Wednesday (Sept. 29) to battle the Humber Hawks (1-1). All the action starts at 4:30 p.m. at Ontario Soccer Centre.
