WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

The women's volleyball program has been heading in the right direction the last two seasons. In 2018-19, they finished with an 8-10 record and placed 5th in the East Division, which qualified them for the program's first crossover playoff match since the program was inaugurated in 2006-07. The very next season, they took another massive step and posted a program-best 11-7 record and placed fourth in the East Division. It marked the first time the program hosted a crossover playoff match.

Coach’s Quote

Under fifth-year head coach, Daphne Choi, the program has developed into a top-notch team in the OCAA. After making history the last two seasons, she believes this team will continue that trend.

“Our team strives to "always do better."  Every year we are getting stronger and more confident.  This year, I'm expecting us to perform at a historic best and to showcase what hard work and integrity in practice and games translates to - a winning team,” she explained.

A big reason why she thinks this team will make a ton of noise in 2022 is because of the overall culture.

“The strength of this team is the culture of family, and of hard work.  Everyone understands and works for the same goal - so everyone understands their role and the work that's required to do that role to its full potential. It makes everyone a better athlete, and a better teammate,” she explained.

Key Returning Players

Ashley Lau
Position: Outside Hitter
Lau was recruited to the program in 2018, and right from the start was one of the top all-around players in the province. She is a player that any team would love to have because of how much she can affect a match. In 35 career matches, the outside hitter has averaged 2.3 points off 1.54 kills and 0.75 service aces per set, while also chipping in with a team-high 2.19 digs per set.

The Toronto, Ont., native was one of the best players in the OCAA during the 2019-20 season, nearing the top in every statistical category for the team, while setting various career-highs. The outside hitter improvement in her second season resulted in being named an OCAA Second Team East Division All-Star.

Angelique Agustin
Position: Outside Hitter
Agustin first joined the program prior to the 2016-17 season, took a year off after her first season and rejoined the team the following two seasons. She took a massive step in her development during the 2019-20 season when she averaged career-highs in every statistical category. The versatile player earned the team's TOPS Volleyball Fair Play Award for her efforts. She has played in 40 career matches in three seasons and is primed to have another solid campaign. She was named team captain for the season.

Megi Memcaj
Position: Libero
Mamcaj walked on to the program during the 2019-20 season making her first appearance in the second half of the season. However, it did not take long for her to make a name for herself in the OCAA, regularly displaying both her offensive power and defensive instincts. She was asked to play numerous positions and made an impact every time. She averaged 2.2 points off 1.93 kills per set while adding 1.79 digs per set in nine matches. Her best match came in the season finale when she posted a career-high 14 points off 13 kills against Seneca College. She will be the primary libero moving forward, which is her natural position.

Jasmin Walia
Program: Setter
Walia was brought on to the Huskies program in 2017. The setter has been tasked with running and executing plays for the offence for the last three seasons and is a big reason why the program has taken significant steps since. She has appeared in 40 career matches so far, averaging 5.97 assists per match, while adding 0.9 points per set and 1.28 digs per set. Walia's commitment to her development resulted in her receiving the Kimchan Fitness Award in 2019.

Recruited Players

Emily Braam
Position: Outside hitter

Exhibition Notable Stats
Heading into this season, team captain Angelique Agustin, was expected to see her responsibilities grow, and during exhibition action, she didn't disappoint. Her best performance came against the Seneca Sting in December. The fourth-year outside hitter posted a game-high 18 points off 16 kills and two service aces while adding three digs. Agustin has already been named Huskies Athlete of the Week twice.
