SOCCER TEAMS CELEBRATE SENIORS DAY WITH SWEEP OF CENTENNIAL

Vilela, Mijackovic and Kinani celebrate goal

On Saturday October 12th our Men's and Women's Soccer teams celebrated each program's graduating athletes, recognizing them on field pre-game versus Centennial for their time and commitment with their programs. And the Husky teams did not disappoint the crowd, sweeping the Colts with 3-2 (women) and 6-1 (men) wins.

The Women's team got down early to the visiting Colts on a goal by #2 Nailah Rowe in the 53rd minute, but found the back of the net in response on a perfectly placed strike by graduating senior Kristen Stellino (2) in the 59th minute. Centennial scored next off of a direct kick set play outside the box following a yellow card to the Huskies' Cynthia Pellegrino, but the home team would again rally with another of their own from Makayla Cabral (5) a few minutes later.

With the game into extra time, Huskies forward Jaelyn Wright was taken down outside the Colts 18-yard box leading to a free kick. Freshman Danielle Montecinos responded under the pressure and curled the ball left of the defensive wall beautifully, the goalkeeper getting only fingertips on it. The ball then bounced around the goal line before being tapped in for insurance once again by Makayla Cabral (5), sealing a 3-2 victory for the Huskies.

On the Men's side of the ball, after a slow first half start and early break-away goal by Centennial forward Damian Davis the Huskies regrouped at half time and never looked back. In the 55th minute the Huskies netted their first off a Filipe Vilela (10) header from a free kick by Zuheib Mohamed just outside the corner of the box.

The Huskies would take the lead in the 68th minute on a tap-in header over the goalie from 5th year graduating captain Robert Mijackovic (1). Rookie Ameer Kinani (7) would then go on an incredible scoring spree between the 72nd-90th minute, scoring four goals to give the Huskies a dominant 6-1 win over the Colts.

Both teams travel to Fleming College on Tuesday October 15th to close out the regular season. A Men's win would lock up 4th place in the standings and secure a spot in a crossover playoff match. The Women's team has already secured a 5th place crossover playoff match appearance, but will look to finish the season a winning note as they go into the playoffs.
