Men's Baseball pitcher Hayden Wesseling and Women's Volleyball left-side hitter Taylor Grant have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 2, 2022.
Hayden Wesseling (Men's Baseball)
Pitcher Hayden Wesseling had a solid day on the mound on Sunday October 2, 2022 versus the Fanshawe Falcons.
The 2nd year Business program student pitched six and one-third innings, nearly finishing the complete game. Over those innings he faced 29 batters, he gave up only six hits while striking out two. Wesseling retired the side in four or less batters on four occasions throughout the afternoon.
The 6'4" right-handed pitcher spent the last two years with Monroe Community College before transferring to join the Huskies for the 2022-23 season.
Taylor Grant (Women's Volleyball)
Taylor Grant played a central role in the Huskies Women's Volleyball team's first pre-season clashes of the season this past weekend. In a historic first, the Women defeated the Niagara Knights on Friday (Sept 30) in a five-set marathon by a score of 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 15-10). After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Huskies closed out the 5th and deciding set in convincing fashion after being the first to eight points.
In the second game of a back-to-back, Grant was again a pillar of the offense on Saturday (Oct 1) against the Seneca Sting on the road in what ended up being another nail bitting affair. The Huskies and Sting battled back and forth all game, with the Sting narrowly coming away with the 3-2 victory after a final set win of 15-13. The 5-foot-9 left-side hitter from Winnipeg, Man., came to the Huskies after spending the two years with the University of Winnipeg – College Wesmen.
