The department will highlight the nominees of the Huskies major awards - Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Female Rookie of the Year, Male Rookie of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and Male Athlete of the Year - during the week leading up to the 54th Annual George Brown College Athletic Awards on Friday April 5th at the Glenn Gould Studio.
Here are the nominees for the 2023-24 Team of the Year.
Men’s Basketball
The program continued their recent run of success this past season and made history. They finished second in the East Division with a 14-4 record, which was the third best record in the province. George Brown ranked among the top five in the OCAA in various offensive and defensive metrics. The team earned an OCAA silver medal for the second consecutive season and secured a berth at the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship for the third time in four seasons. At the Nationals, they went on to clinch the silver medal, marking the program’s best result since 1976.
Women’s Basketball
This season marked a significant turnaround for the women’s basketball program. They improved from a 3-11 record to an 8-6 standing, clinching third place in the East Division. George Brown displayed their effective play offensively and defensively throughout the campaign as they ranked in the top in the OCAA in points per game, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, opponents' field goal percentage and opponents' three-point percentage. the team not only hosted a playoff game but also emerged victorious, marking their first playoff win since 2020. Additionally, two student-athletes received OCAA honors, further highlighting the team's success and individual excellence.
Men’s Soccer
The program demonstrated exceptional consistency both indoors and outdoors. In the fall, the Huskies achieved a remarkable milestone with their first undefeated season, boasting a perfect 10-0 record. They clinched the East Division crown, scoring a league-leading 62 goals while conceding the fewest, with only four against them. The team received a total of 15 OCAA awards for their outstanding regular-season performance. Additionally, they hosted the OCAA Provincial Championship and finished fourth.
George Brown carried the momentum into the indoor season. They topped their pool at Regionals and secured the bronze medal at the OCAA Provincial Championships. Throughout nine matches, they only allowed more than two goals on one occasion. This achievement marked the program's sixth medal in the last eight seasons, underscoring their consistent success across different seasons and formats.
Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team underwent a remarkable transformation, as they improved their win count by eight from the previous year, ending with an impressive 11-7 record and securing fourth place in the East Division. George Brown showcased their strength by ranking among the top eight in the OCAA in several key metrics, including kills per set, total attacks, hitting percentage, and assists per set. They hosted the program’s first crossover playoff match since 2018. The team achieved this successful season with a youthful roster, with 14 out of the 16 players in their first or second year of eligibility.
