The George Brown Huskies are pleased to announce the addition of an Esports varsity team starting in January of 2022.
“Today is a historic day for the George Brown Huskies as we take a step into the future,” said Manager of Athletics & Recreation Candice O’Donnell. “This is a great opportunity for all students, the department and college to get involved in the fasting growing sports in the world. We are extremely excited to compete in a new sport and help our future student-athletes achieve their goals.”
The first Esports title the Huskies will compete in is League of Legends. The title is a team-based strategy game where two teams of five champions battle to destroy the other’s base. There are 140 champions that student-athletes can choose from to take down towers, destroy enemies and buy items on the road to victory.
“Esports becoming a varsity sport is a necessary acknowledgment for the future of sports in general. Varsity Esports have exploded in popularity over the last five years, as a result of the ever-expanding range of competitive titles and the evolving competitive scene,” interim head coach Sam Levy explained. “Esports are also fascinating in that they tend to transcend geographic area or even regions, providing players from all around the world to compete and connect with one another. GBC itself is participating in leagues that span North America, which is just one of many ways we can demonstrate the calibre of the program we are building. This is a great way for us to expand student life on campus and create an exciting new chapter in GBC’s sporting history.”
We are currently building our team for the upcoming winter season. The Huskies plan on exploring the potential to compete in more titles in future years. The team will be hosting tryouts this week.
