HUSKIES PUNCH TICKET TO OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

Huskies #11 takes a dribble backwards from two Redeemer defenders

The George Brown Huskies men's basketball team delivered on Saturday (Feb 25) with a convincing 102-84 playoff crossover win against the visiting Redeemer Royals, punching their ticket to the 2023 OCAA Men's Basketball Provincial Championship hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor, ON from March 3-5, 2023.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Huskies (17-1) demonstrated poise and patience, just as they have all semester, en route to the big 102-84 victory over the Redeemer Royals (5-13). The win avenged an early playoff exit for George Brown last season, who lost to the hands of the Royals on the same home court, in the same crossover match that ended the Huskies 2021-22 season.

The #1 ranked Huskies controlled the game from the opening tip, not leaving the 8th seed Royals any room to breath or get any momentum. George Brown's high-pressure defence stormed out of the gate, forcing six turnovers in the first frame alone. Shooting 52.6% from the floor, the home team held a 27-18 advantage after 10 minutes. A lead that would double in the second quarter and hold steady from there through till the final whistle.

The Huskies rode the coattails of a career-high performance from 4th Year forward Jeremiah Brown. The Early Childhood Education student finished the game with 27 points on 9-13 shooting, including going 5-6 from beyond the three-point line and 4-5 from the free throw line. Three other Huskies would also finish in double digits - Caldre Campbell (16), Jacob Masters (14) and Derrick Taylor (10) on way to the victory.

UP NEXT: The win qualifies George Brown for the OCAA Men's Basketball Provincial Championship next week. The last time the Huskies participated in 2019-2020, they captured the gold medal, a first in the program's history since 1976. Unfortunately, their continued participation in the 2020 CCAA National Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Huskies kick of their championship run on Friday March 3rd at 3pm vs the Niagara Knights at St. Clair College.
