The George Brown Women's Basketball team is pleased to announce the addition of three recruits, Thorin Pangan, Antaya Tyrell and Genève Biollo, for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
These young women join the team as true freshmen and are hoping to add to the program's recent success. The Huskies are coming off another great season going 13-3, which improved the program's record to a combined 42-8 in the regular season since 2017-2018. The team has finished in the top two in the OCAA East Division every year during this stretch.
Thorin Pangan - 5'7/Point Guard & Shooting Guard
Program: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
"I decided to commit to George Brown because I know this school was the best fit for my basketball career as well as my academics," Pangan explained. "I've seen how much this team has accomplished in the past couple of years, and I would love to be a part of the success of the program."
The combo guard comes into the Huskies program after dominating at the high school level. During her time at St. Paul Secondary School, she was the captain of the varsity Girls Basketball team in all four years, a two-time Girls Basketball MVP and received Female Athlete of the Year. Pangan's name also appeared on the Top 10 in Hooptown GTA 20 points club, and she participated in the Canletes Women's Ontario High School All-Star Game. With the departure of fifth-year point guard Zae Sellers, interim head coach Omari Wiltshire believes the freshman will fit very well with the program.
"Thorin has the character to fit the point guard mold we're looking for on the court. She's a gamer at the position, will rub off on her teammates and will give us a dynamic guard that has a balance of both attacking and passing in her package," Wiltshire stated. "We believe that she will fit in nicely with our up-tempo style of play and rise to the challenge quickly."
Antaya Tyrell – 5'4/Guard
Program: Welding Techniques
"I'm looking forward to coming to George Brown because of its excellent trades programs and for the outstanding welcome I received from not only the coaches but the players as well," Tyrell stated. "What I hope to gain on the court is easy - a championship, new skills, and memories to come with it."
Tyrell spent the last two years playing for her high school team, Thornlea Secondary School, and club team, Canada Elite. She has earned numerous accolades with both teams including multiple tournament MVP's, season MVP's, defensive player of the year and a leadership award as well. These sorts of successes are why Wiltshire thinks she is the perfect addition to the Huskies.
"Antaya brings a voice to the game. We love the fact that she is not afraid to take on the leadership role. We sought her out to help continue the culture we have been creating at GBC, and to add to that she is a tough competitor on the court," Wiltshire explained. "She will bring some hard-nosed style of play that you have no other choice but to follow."
Genève Biollo – 5'7/Guard
Program: Fashion Techniques and Design
"I committed to George Brown due to its location in downtown Toronto, its amazing fashion design program as well its welcoming team atmosphere. George Brown is the perfect environment for me to grow and thrive as an artist and teammate," Biollo said.
The guard played varsity basketball at l'École Maurice-Lavallée as well as Harry Ainlay high school. She is extremely grateful for what her coaches with both teams brought her. "They have all impacted me not only through basketball but by teaching me many valuable life lessons that I will cherish with me as I move on to this new phase of my life and basketball career," comments Biollo. What stands out to Wiltshire the most about Biollo's game is her deep range and her basketball IQ.
"It was important to recruit Genève due to the fact we needed to improve our three-point shooting from last season," Wiltshire said. "She brings that extra edge of perimeter shooting along with IQ of having played positions 1 to 3. I believe she will make a great impact with our current group of women."
