HUSKIES COME OUT ON TOP IN SEASON OPENER

HUSKIES COME OUT ON TOP IN SEASON OPENER

The George Brown College Women's Soccer team came roaring out of the gates to start the 2019 campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over the Loyalist Lancers in Belleville on Friday night.

Coming off of a strong off-season recruiting campaign, the bolstered roster looks primed to turn some heads early on this season. Last year's Central Division Coach of the Year Leslie Fitzpatrick's involvement in high level youth soccer provided a solid base for player recruitment.

"This past off-season was a massive one for us", says Fitzpatrick. "It is a strong recruiting class as we have as many as seven players who would occupy starting positions for us. Of those, I think we have at least three that may merit All-OCAA recognition come the end of the season if they play to their full abilities."

A team whose focus has been primarily on the defense end under Fitzpatrick, the Huskies' 4-goal offensive output was a far cry from their mere 1.1 goals per game from 2018. And that, with different players finding the back of the net on each occasion on strikes from Yakutchik, Stellino, Samuels-McLaughlin and Virelli. An output Fitzpatrick attributes to a more balanced offensive attack. "The goals can come from a number of players this year, so it's a bit harder for teams to focus in on just shutting down one or two of them. To have four different players on the scoresheet last night is a source of pride for the team."

The Huskies will look to carry the momentum into their home opener on Friday September 13th at Esther Shiner Stadium against the visiting Durham Lords. Women kick-off at 6:30pm, men open their season at 8:30pm.
