BADMINTON PICKS UP RIGHT WHERE LEFT OFF TO START 2019

George Brown Badminton kicked off the 2019-20 tournament season with a visit to the Li-Ning Humber Cup on October 11-12th, 2019. And the former #1 ranked team in Canada would pick up right where they left off last season, coming away with five medals on the weekend.

Newcomer Huyen Le had her way through the Women's Singles draw, capturing gold over teammate and 2018-19 OCAA Gold Medalist Ahn Hoang with a score of 21-13, 21-12. These two women will be a force to compete with this season, also taking the Women's Double crown with a 21-8, 21-11 victory over Humber College's Victoria Duong/Susanna Quach pairing.

On the Men's side, national medalist Ace Zeng was forced to retire in the final, conceding to Ramnish Kumar after splitting the first two sets 21-16 and 14-21.

Zeng and Le would also pair up for the Mix Doubles discipline, making it all the way to the final again where they would come away with a silver medal versus Seneca's Poy Lo/Christine Nguyen. The contest was back and forth and went the distance, going a full three sets where the Huskies fell 17-21, 21-18, 21-19.

Head coach Will Schram was encouraged by the way his group came out in the first competition of the season. "Our team as a whole had fantastic results, but Huyen Le lead the way in her first tournament representing GBC, with two gold medals and a silver. She was the only athlete at the tournament to medal in 3 events."

George Brown looks to defend its Men's and Women's Provincial Team Championships from last season, which includes two provincial gold medals and two provincial silver medals, and two CCAA National Championship silver medals.

The team will get back to the practice courts in preparation for their next tournament hosted by Fanshawe College on November 15-17, 2019.
