ZENG CLAIMS BRONZE AT NATIONALS

Ace Zeng capped off his George Brown Huskies career by earning the bronze medal in Men's Singles at the CCAA National Badminton Championships on Saturday afternoon at NAIT College in Edmonton, Alta.

In his third career trip to the national stage, he took down Narayan Ramdhani of King’s University 2-0 (21-17, 21-11) to claim his second career medal there. He also won conference team supremacy gold as part of Team OCAA.

“Achieving a national medal is always an outstanding accomplishment,” head coach William Schram said. “His play during these championships was outstanding from start to finish, and we were all very proud of him.”

Before the tournament began, the fourth-year player was named a CCAA All-Canadian for the second time in his career. Right from the get-go, Zeng displayed why he was the 2022 OCAA Men’s Badminton Player of the Year by finishing first in the pool going 4-1. He had an epic match with the eventual gold medal winner Smit Patel of NAIT College in the semifinals. The battle went to a third set, and Zeng fell just short, dropping a 2-1 (21-23, 21-17, 19-21) decision.

He wraps up his stellar Huskies career with one national silver and bronze medal, two provincial gold medals, one provincial silver medal, all of which came in Men’s Singles and a two-time OCAA Men’s Player of the Year. When head coach Schram reflects on Zeng’s time with the program, he explains how privileged it was to work and get to know him.

“Having a top player like Ace for the last four seasons has been a pleasure. He has been the foundation of our program since 2017 from a playing standpoint,” he said. “He has also been one of the leaders on our team who is widely respected by all the players and coaches from other schools. Overall, it has been a privilege to have Ace on our team and to coach him.”

This marks the fourth season in a row that a Husky has won a CCAA National medal.
