HUSKIES WIN GBC INVITATIONAL

The men’s indoor soccer team went undefeated to finish first place at the GBC Invitational on Friday (Jan. 26) afternoon. The women’s indoor soccer team had a few tight matches but failed to get out of group play at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

In round-robin action, the men had a few tight contests. In their first match with the score 1-1, Gianfranco Gileppo found the back of the net with 10 seconds left to seal the win over the Lambton Lions. They posted the same score against the St. Clair Saints in the second match. Similar situation, with the score evened a 1-1 late in the match Ali Zahidi tapped in the game-winner. The Huskies scored a late goal for the third straight match to edge out the Lakehead Thunderwolves to finish first in their pool.

The semifinal against the Fanshawe Falcons was a defensive standoff. The only player to find the back of the net the entire match was George Brown’s own Yonis Jama.

Jama brought that momentum into the finals. He recorded two goals and an assist in a 3-1 victory over the Conestoga Condors.

The women had a strong showing in a trio of tight matches. After falling to the Lambton Lions 2-0, George Brown went toe-to-toe against the St. Clair Saints. Sonia Chwalek sniped the bottom corner off a turnover, but the Huskies couldn’t come away with a win, dropping a 2-1 decision. Despite generating numerous scoring chances against Lakehead, they were defeated by a score of 2-0 to finish their day.

UP NEXT: The team has time to prepare for Regionals. The women are up on Monday, February 26th, while the men play on Tuesday, February 27th. Both are happening at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont.
