2023-24 NOMINEES: MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

2023-24 NOMINEES: MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The department will highlight the nominees of the Huskies major awards - Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Female Rookie of the Year, Male Rookie of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and Male Athlete of the Year - during the week leading up to the 54th Annual George Brown College Athletic Awards on Friday April 5th at the Glenn Gould Studio.

Here are the nominees for the 2023-24 Male Rookie of the Year.

Kent Ayco & Henry Chan, Badminton
The duo emerged as a force in Men's Doubles in the OCAA. During Regionals, they demonstrated their dominance with an impressive 4-0 record, not dropping a single set in round-robin play. Their stellar performance secured the top position in the pool and earned them a coveted spot at the OCAA Provincial Championships. Although they finished fourth at Provincials, their remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed, as they were both honored with OCAA Badminton Men’s East Regional All-Star accolades in recognition of their outstanding play.

Matthias Broomes, Men’s Soccer
The first-year forward was almost unstoppable every time he was on the pitch, both during the outdoor and indoor seasons. In the fall, he was one of the best players in the province, finishing second in the OCAA, scoring 13 goals in nine matches. His exceptional performance was pivotal in the Huskies achieving an undefeated campaign for the first time in program history, earning him recognition as the East Division Rookie of the Year and an East Division First-Team All-Star.

In the indoor season, Broomes did not slow down. His play-making and scoring abilities pushed the Huskies to an undefeated record at Regionals and later to a bronze medal at the OCAA Provincial Championships.

Marcus Herback, Men’s Baseball
The second baseman did not look out of place in the OCAA. Offensively, he was a force for the Huskies, leading the team with 16 RBIs, second on the team with 20 hits and five doubles, and third on the team with a .455 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was a vacuum and played all 18 games at second base. The Huskies finished with the second-best record in program history, partly due to the first-year’s great play.
