2023-24 NOMINEES: FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

2023-24 NOMINEES: FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

The department will highlight the nominees of the Huskies major awards - Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Female Rookie of the Year, Male Rookie of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and Male Athlete of the Year - during the week leading up to the 54th Annual George Brown College Athletic Awards on Friday April 5th at the Glenn Gould Studio.

Here are the nominees for the 2023-24 Female Athlete of the Year.

Ashley Altamirano,
Women’s Soccer
Altamirano was the perfect addition for the Huskies this past season. During the outdoor season, the midfielder dictated the game's tempo while showcasing remarkable offensive and defensive skills. She recorded two goals and three assists while starting in nine matches. She continued to make a significant impact during the indoor season, where her contributions were instrumental in the team's competitive run, just missing out on the Provincial Championships due to tiebreakers.

Jordyn Dawkins, Women’s Basketball
Dawkins provided exceptional leadership and offence to the second unit, averaging 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and just under a steal per game. She helped the team secure and win a home playoff game for the first time since 2020. She finished the season ranking in the top three on the team in points, shooting percentage, and three-point percentage. Dawkins was the perfect spark plug off the bench, so much so that she was named East Division Sixth Woman of the Year.

Giselle Kochapanya, & Monique Lee, Badminton
This duo experienced a historic run in Women’s Doubles within the program. Their outstanding performance led to an undefeated run at the Provincial Championships, where they secured a gold medal in the discipline for the first time since 1991. Then, they clinched a silver medal at the CCAA National Badminton Championships, marking the program's best-ever performance in this discipline.

Individually, Lee was named Women’s Badminton Player of the Year, Women’s East Division Player of the Year, and an OCAA Women’s East Regional All-Star. Kochapanya was also named an OCAA Women’s East Regional All-Star.

Claire Ramos, Women’s Volleyball
As a first-year libero for the Huskies, Ramos showcased her defensive skills, quickly establishing herself as one of the best players in her position. She ranked third in the OCAA in both total digs (251) and digs per set (3.75), a remarkable achievement for a first-year student-athlete. Ramos's contagious energy and upbeat demeanor have been invaluable to George Brown since her arrival, seamlessly integrating into the team from the outset. In recognition of her outstanding performance in her debut season, she earned two OCAA awards, being named an East Division Second Team All-Star and a member on the East Division All-Rookie Team.
