HUSKIES APPOINT WONG AS BADMINTON HEAD COACH

HUSKIES APPOINT WONG AS BADMINTON HEAD COACH

The George Brown Huskies are thrilled to announce the promotion of Howard Wong to Head Coach of the Badminton team. Wong has been a dedicated assistant coach for the program over the past 13 years.

"Relieved, Ecstatic and Nervous in that order. Having been part of the badminton program for 13 years, there is a tremendous amount of success and history under the leaderships of Coach Kim and Coach Will. Those are BIG shoes to fill, and I embrace this new challenge and hope to bring continued success (more golds please)." Wong explained. "I've observed this positive direction and culture set by the Athletics department across all varsity sports translating to unprecedented success. The expectations are definitely higher and rightfully so because the coaching staff and athletes are putting in the work and reaping the results. I'm happy to continue being part of this Husky family."

Wong joined the Huskies as an assistant coach in September 2011. Since his arrival, he has been instrumental in establishing George Brown as a formidable force in badminton. The team has secured nine gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals at the OCAA level under his guidance. At the CCAA National Championship level, the program has earned one gold, eight silver, and four bronze medals.

"Howard was without a doubt the best candidate to continue on the strong legacy of our Huskies Badminton program. With nearly 15 years of experience as an assistant coach alongside Will [Schram] and also previously Kim [Ng], he's developed as a coach from some of the best in the business. And we're confident that he'll be able to continue our winning tradition here at George Brown for years to come both on the court and in the classroom," Manager of Athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie said.

Throughout his coaching tenure with the Huskies, Wong has served under former head coaches Will Schram and Kim Ng. He has gained invaluable experience from both, preparing him well for his new role as head coach.

"There is so much knowledge and experience between both Will and Kim that I am forever fortunate and privileged to have been able to observe, learn and work with them.  For those in the badminton community, I am very passionate about the sport both in competition and when coaching. I've definitely taken a more measured and calmer approach compared to when I first started. Like Kim, I continue to express the joy and excitement from competing and playing to our athletes," Wong stated. "I will certainly try to adopt more of Will's approach of balancing being both firm and fair when it comes to communicating with the athletes and running practices. Setting the expectation level and goals for both staff and the players at the start will sharpen and motivate all. A focus on fitness, strength and conditioning will continue."

Wong is committed to building on Schram and Ng's strong team culture and foundation, aiming to lead the Huskies to even greater success.

"Player development and continual improvement are crucial. It's all about being a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday. I want to set clear expectations and goals for both the staff and players right from the start helps sharpen and motivate everyone, while focusing a lot on fitness, strength, and conditioning," Wong said. "Our history of winning banners and medals at provincial and national levels sets a high standard for us all. Success can be really intoxicating, but we need to channel that emotion and energy to keep pushing forward. It's also super important to ensure our student-athletes balance their personal, academic, and athletic commitments for their overall growth and success."
