The George Brown Huskies announce that Badminton head coach, Will Schram, will be stepping down from his position going into the 2024-25 season. The East Division Coach of the Year and former OCAA Coach of the Year is leaving the program after eight years of impactful seasons at the helm.
"My overall experience over the last eight years at GBC has been incredible. From the time I started, our athletic team, from manager to support staff, has been incredibly supportive and a solid team experience for me. My assistant coaches are amazing people, knowledgeable and they bleed Husky blue. Being the head coach is something I would love to continue to do, but family comes first," Schram explained. "My past students have become friends, part of our coaching staff and sparring team. We have created a solid team culture that expects results, but it is a full team effort. I would like to thank Melanie, Mark, Wendy, Kyra and their teams for all the passion and support they have brought over the last eight years. I will miss being a part of the team, but I will always be a Husky."
When Schram joined the program in October 2016 the Huskies continued to be one of the most consistent threats for medals on the provincial following Kim Ng's storied tenure, and went to become perennial contenders on the national stage.
"Will is an exceptional coach and competitor, and he'll be sorely missed.", said Melanie Gerin-Lajoie, Manager Athletics & Recreation. "He is highly respected not only in Ontario but across the country as one of the best out there, and we are truly grateful for the great years he's spent with us at the Huskies."
Under his leadership, the program has secured eight gold, six silver and five bronze medals, winning six team championship titles at the OCAA level. Additionally, he has achieved success at the CCAA National Championships, earning the one gold medal, six silver medals, and four bronze medals.
The pinnacle campaign came when he coached Huyen Le to George Brown's first-ever Badminton CCAA national banner, and first in overall Huskies history, after winning the gold medal in Women's Singles and completing a perfect 35-0 campaign during the 2019-2020 season.
