The George Brown Huskies women's basketball team picked up an 86-75 victory over the UTM Eagles at Casa Loma Athletic Centre on Friday night.
Notable Stats: Victoria Lawrence filled the stat sheet recording a game-high 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, while veteran guard Zae Sellers did the same with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Fourth-year forward Coco Sauve chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds in the victory.
Jade Addai led the way for the Eagles with 24 points and five steals.
Coming off a tough loss to Durham earlier in the week head coach Warren Williams wanted to see action instead of words. "We talked at practice about enough of the talking and now it needs to be about what we're actually going to do. If we make a mistake do the next thing. Let's not talk about it anymore, let's start to do it. I thought we did a much better job tonight of making plays instead of talking about it."
How It Happened: Both teams came out firing on all cylinders as they shot 50% from the field. Thanks to a trio of three-pointers from Sellers, the Huskies led 24-21 after the opening quarter.
The Eagles responded generating a 17-3 run to jump ahead and take a 44-41 lead into halftime. The Huskies put together a response of their own outscoring the Eagles 21-13 out of the half to take a 62-57 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The back-and-forth continued in the final quarter, which saw the Eagles only down by three late in the frame. The Huskies though put their foot back on the gas pedal and outscored their opponents 13-5 the rest of the way for the win.
First-year guard Samuelle Hakh, who hit a pair of clutch three-pointers down the stretch believes the team's overall defence was a key factor. "We communicated a lot more and played better defence. We just played better as a team."
Up Next: The Huskies will host the undefeated Algonquin Thunder on Friday, January 31st at Casa Loma Athletic Centre. Tip-off is at for 6:00 pm.
