Indoor soccer hosts George Brown Invitational

Both the men and women will participate in the George Brown Invitational on Thursday. All the teams will play three round-robin matches against squads in their groups. The top two teams from each group will then play a crossover semi-final match, 1st Pool A vs 2nd Pool B and 1st Pool B vs 2nd Pool A, to decide the finals.
There has been no championship hangover for the men in 2020. They began their season going undefeated to win the Centennial Invitational. The Huskies followed it up by earning a finals berth at the Redeemer Invitational before dropping a close 2-0 decision to the Humber Hawks. So far George Brown holds an 8-1 record while outscoring their opponents 38-11 in that span.
Fourth-year forward Zuheib Mohamed has been an offensive juggernaut recording 12 goals so far. George Brown will face Canadore, St. Lawrence and Seneca in the group stage.
The women are entering their second invitational of the season. Last weekend, the Huskies won one of their four round-robin matches, but two of those losses were one-goal affairs. The women will play Canadore, St. Lawrence, and Laurier Brantford in round-robin play.

The men (13-1, 1st in East) are at home for back-to-back games against the Algonquin Thunder and La Cite Coyotes. The Huskies are currently on an unprecedented 13 game-winning streak.
The critical difference between George Brown and other colleges is their depth. Five players are averaging over 10 points per game, and the team also has two individuals just shy of double-digits averaging 9.9 points per game. In combination with the defence that ranks first in points allowed, the Huskies are a tough team to beat.
They will battle a struggling Algonquin (3-11, 10th in East) team who just ended a seven-game losing streak followed by La Cite (7-6, 5th in East) less than 19 hours later. Since the Coyotes impressive play in the Annual Huskies Basketball Tournament earlier in the month, the team has found their groove. During their current three-game winning streak they are scoring over 91 points, while only surrendering an average of 78 points.
The women (8-3, 3rd in East) on the other hand only have one game, but an incredibly tough matchup against the undefeated Algonquin Thunder (11-0, 1st in East). The Huskies are coming off an impressive 86-75 victory over the UTM Eagles. The last time these two teams played it came down to the wire with George Brown losing by only two possessions.
2020 has been the year of Victoria Lawrence. The second-year player is averaging 25 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in the New Year. While running mate Zae Sellers is averaging 19 points, four assists and over two steals in the last four games.

The women (8-5, 5th in East) have been on a roll recently winning four of their last five matches, most recently a five-set victory over Centennial. They first play one of the best teams in the Algonquin Thunder (11-3, 2nd in East). The last time these two squads went head-to-head, the Huskies fell in five-sets. The following day, the team travels down the street to duel La Cite College (6-7, 6th in East).
George Brown relies on its balanced attack orchestrated by setter Angelique Agustin. Since the former outside hitter switched positions, the Huskies are 3-1 and Agustin is averaging over 23 assists per match.
The men (7-6, 6th in East) are looking to build off an impressive five-set victory over Centennial this week. The first match against Algonquin is a big one since George Brown can leapfrog them in the standings with a win. The next day they battle a struggling La Cite (1-12, 9th in East) team.
Since fifth-year outside hitter Yuseph Jackman went down with an injury, Vivek Mathimakki has picked up the slack. In the last three matches, he's averaging five points per set and has a hitting percentage of almost 40%. A perfect example of this came against Centennial where the second-year right-side hitter accounted for 29 of the team's 60 points in the match.
