BASEBALL DRAWS EVEN IN SEASON OPENER SWING TRIP

Baseball player slides into base

Huskies Men's Baseball kicked off the 2022-23 campaign with their only two-game road trip of the season, a swing to St Clair College (Windsor) and Lambton College (Sarnia) for back-to-back double headers. The team would come away from a grueling four games in two days with a 2-2 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED | BSB @ ST CLAIR: Nathan Long (1st Year) got the call to the mound for the Huskies (2-2) to open the regular season in GM1 against the St Clair Saints (3-1). The pitcher struck out four, while walking four and being credited for two earned runs. He was relieved by fellow freshman Simon Jardine (1st Year) midway through the contest, who would also surrender two runs on two hits, neither of them earned.

The Huskies bats were kept quiet most of the night following a strong performance by St. Clair's Evan Ferguson, who only have up three hits on the night over a full seven innings of work. George Brown would fall in their season opener by a final score of 4-0.

In GM 2 of the double header the Huskies bats showed some life, recording 10 hits on the evening. However, the Saints responded with 13 hits of their own, including two 5-run innings in the 3rd and 4th. The Huskies would notch a few more runs in the 5th, but failed to close the gap any further and would drop the decision 12-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED | BSB @ LAMBTON: On Sunday the Huskies continued their swing trip, making their way to Sarnia to battle the Lambton Lions (0-4). Hayden Wesseling  (2nd Year) got the call to start for GM 1, and did not disappoint. A transfer from Monroe Community College (NJCAA-2) this past offseason, Wesseling wasted no time getting comfortable in the Husky blue, recording six strikeouts over five strong innings with all earned runs against him coming in the bottom of the fourth.

Wesseling's strong pitching was matched by active Huskies bats, with seven players recording a hit or more on the game. All of that action came mid-game, with the visiting team recording three runs in back to back 3rd and 4th innings to mount a 6-0 lead. The Lions battled back in the bottom of the 4th with four runs of their own, but that is as close as things would come. The efficiency at the plate was led by sophomore catcher Brady Wagenhoffer who went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to his credit. Wagenhoffer was also called in in relief of Wesseling in the 6th inning, where in his two innings pitched recorded four strikeouts and only two hits, earning himself the save.

GM 2 proved to be more of the same at the plate, with George Brown hitting coming to life in the form of 17 hits and 11 runs on the afternoon. The Huskies got out to an early 8-0 lead by the end of their half of the 3rd, and never looked back. Wagenhoffer was stellar again, going 4 for 4 with a stolen base.

Pitching for George Brown was second year Building Renovation Technology student Michael Guardiero, who went six innings strong, striking out 10 batters along the way to being credited the win.

WHAT'S UP NEXT: After a 2-2 start to the season on the road, the Huskies head home to Christie Pits on Wednesday (Sept. 14) to host the Durham Lords (3-1) for the George Brown home opener. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 5pm. Fans can also watch the game on our Livestream channel if are not able to make it out in person. Watch LIVE here!
