BASEBALL SHUTS OUT SAULT IN WEEKEND DOUBLEHEADER

Huskies Hayden Wesseling pitches

Huskies Men's Baseball blanked their opponent on Saturday (Sept. 24), registering shutouts in both games of their doubleheader against the Sault College Cougars (2-8) and improving their record to 7-3 on the season. It marks the first time in program history that George Brown has recorded as many wins in a season, and that with eight games still remaining on the schedule.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GM1: The Huskies came out of the gates firing, registering four runs in the opening inning off of three hits, one walk, and a hit by a pitch. Riding the consistent pitching of 2nd Year pitcher Michael Guardiero (2-0), George Brown maintained complete control of the game the rest of the way through. Guardiero allowed only four hits over four innings of work, striking out four. Three of which came in the top of the 3rd inning, where the pitcher struck out the side.

The Huskies would double their lead through the 3rd (1) and 5th innings (3), with Brady Wagenhoffer's hot bat contributing to two of the four remaining runs. Wagenhoffer finished 3 for 3 on the afternoon nearly hitting for the elusive "cycle", by registering a single, double and triple. The 2nd Year catcher currently leads the league in batting average (.556), RBIs (18) and home runs (3). Teammate Tyler Romandel (2nd Year) sits right behind Wagenhoffer at the top of the batting average chart, with an ave. himself of .545, and also sits tied for second in RBIs with 13.

The game concluded after five innings due to the league Mercy Rule with George Brown taking Game 1 by a final score of 10-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GM2: The pitchers were the name of the game in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Huskies starter Finlay Butler (1st Year) faced eight batters and recorded four strikeouts over two innings of work. Entering the game next was Hayden Wesseling (2nd Year), who did not miss a beat in relief. The 6'4" righthander struck out five Cougars while only giving up two hits over four innings, earning himself the win on the afternoon. Jackson Tutton got the nod to close the game, recording the save by striking out two of the four batters he faced. The Huskies struck out a total of 11 batters while only allowing four hits.

The offense once again did not disappoint, coming up with two big innings to seal the Huskies' seventh win of the season and fifth in a row. The fourth inning started off with a bang, with three back-to-back-to-back doubles off the bats of Robert Vavaroutsos (1st Year), Brady Wagenhoffer and Brendan Nolet (1st Year). Daniel Farrace (2nd Year) and Tyler Romandel also contributed to the scoring with singles. The Huskies would score five in the 4th, taking a commanding 5-0 that they never relinquished.

The Huskies completed the sweep with a final score of 7-0, with Sault Cougars starting pitcher Matthew Forsey pitching a complete game in a losing effort.

UP NEXT: George Brown returns to Christie Pits on Wednesday September 28th to face the Humber Hawks (7-1), who are also currently riding a 5-game winning streak. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm. Watch the game live on our Livestream Channel!
