WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL WELCOMES ASSISTANT COACH OYETAKIN

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL WELCOMES ASSISTANT COACH OYETAKIN

The Huskies women's volleyball team has announced the addition of assistant coach, Will Oyetakin.

The former Georgian Grizzly and Seneca Sting joins a team having reached new heights after setting a program record for wins in a season, having two players near the top of league leaders – one of whom taking home the kills title – and made their first post season appearance in what turned into a crossover loss to the Niagara Knights.

Oyetakin valued his time as an athlete but marks his career after playing as a turning point for him in volleyball – noting Markham Stingers and Centre of Excellence as significant moments for him as a coach. But regardless of where he went, Oyetakin has always been destined to be a Husky.

"Dave Hamilton (Men's volleyball assistant coach) was my high school setter… Daphne and I both live in the Markham area," said Oyetakin "we initially met when we were doing some high-performance coaching clinics and we had a similar mentor in (OVA Hall of Famer) Keith Wasylik. Our relationship grew through being at these camps together."

Head coach Daphne Choi speaks fondly of Oyetakin's ability to develop players. "With Will, there's a strong technical aspect. He's very focused on the fundamental athletic movements and how it applies to the long-term athletic development model," said Choi. "That's something we've lacked in previous years. Of course, we can't discount his strong playing career, can move very well and jump into drills, as well as his ability to relate to the athletes."

The women's volleyball team looks to develop an even deeper playoff run and begin the regular season on October 21, 2023 against the Centennial Colts.
