HUSKES WINNING STREAK HITS SIX

The George Brown Huskies men's basketball team ended their 2022 regular season with a 95-63 victory over the Seneca Sting on Friday night at home.

The victory puts the team's winning streak at six games, and they finish the campaign with a 6-2 record.

NOTABLE STATS: The Huskies were rolling to start the game. Robert Ocampo, Teshayn Gayle and Darnell Richards combined for 18 points to hand the team a 26-15 advantage after the opening 10 minutes. A very similar scoreline for both teams happened in the second quarter, with the Huskies outscoring the Sting 27-15 and led 53-30 heading into the locker room. The team shot just under 49% from the field in the opening half.

First-year guard Jacob Masters kept the momentum going in the third quarter. He went 2-of-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the field for 11 points in the quarter. Seneca was only able to score 10 points in the same amount of time, and they trailed 76-42, heading into the fourth. From there, the Huskies did not look back to capture the team's sixth victory of the season.

Masters was a spark plug off the team, scoring a team-high 17 points in just 19 minutes of action. He also recorded a team-high three steals in the victory. Ocampo dropped 14 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Tyvell Peters put up 13 points off the bench.

UP NEXT: The Huskies (6-2) will finish in the top two in the East Division. The team will host their first-round match on Wednesday, March 9th. Stay tuned to find out George Brown's opponent and time.

2022 Men's Basketball Graduating Student-Athletes

Before the game, the Huskies honour four graduating student-athletes and all of them made an impact on the program during their time here.

"Two years ago when I took this job, I was looking to change the culture," head coach Jason Dawkins explained. "I was looking for individuals that had character, work ethic, leadership and compassion, and these four student-athletes are perfect examples of it."

#3 Teshayn Gayle

Gayle has been a massive part of the Huskies basketball program since joining in 2015. During his five seasons, Gayle can be described as a spark plug. His intensity gave the team much-needed energy at critical points in the game. He has started in 27 of the 74 during five seasons with the team. He was a part of the Huskies team that claimed an OCAA silver medal and earned a berth at the CCAA National Championship in 2017. He's currently experiencing his best collegiate season, posting career-high in numerous categories.

He was also an assistant coach for the 2019-2020 season. He was a part of the staff that led the Huskies to claim the program's first OCAA Championship since 1976. Gayle will be graduating from the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program. Thank you for helping build the Huskies culture!

#2 Robert Ocampo

Ocampo was brought into the Huskies program ahead of the 2018-19 season. He has continued to develop on and off the court from day one. It is very hard for opposing defences to stop when he gets hot from deep. In 43 career games, the shooting guard has averaged 8.6 points on 38.6% shoot from the field and 34.6% from deep. He's currently experiencing his best season as a Husky, putting up career-highs in numerous categories. So far this season, Ocampo is averaging career-high in almost every category.

He is graduating from the Business Administration Advanced Diploma program.

#20 Russel Kalyango Jr.
Kalyango Jr., was a late addition to the Huskies team in January of 2020 after being called up from the Extramural Men's Basketball Team. His work ethic on the court, in the gym, and in the classroom is top-notch. His first season, the 6'6 forward, was mainly a role player during the team's OCAA Championship run. However, this season he has become a starter for the Huskies. This season alone has started in all seven games, averaging 8.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, both of which are career-highs. He's also shooting at an unprecedented rate of 65.8, which ranks 5th in the OCAA.

He will be graduating from the Mechanical Engineering Technology of Design program.

#21 Julian Hinckson Jr.
After three seasons with the Durham Lords between 2016-2019, Hinckson Jr., joined the Huskies ahead of the 2020-2021 season. His character on and off the court only helped the program grow. He has only been able to play two games this season while averaging 12 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He will be a critical piece for this team heading into the playoffs as they look to defend their OCAA Championship. He will be graduating from the Pre-Community Services program.
