The men's indoor soccer team earned a silver medal after falling in penalty kicks to Humber in the gold medal match at the OCAA Provincial Championships on Friday (Mar. 7) afternoon.
It marks the second straight season the program has come away with a medal in indoor soccer.
Mark Do Coito and Yonis Jama were named to the OCAA Championship All-Star Team, while Joseph Agostino earned Keeper of the Tournament.
The day began with a semi-final battle against the Fanshawe Falcons. In the opening 20 minutes, the Huskies dominated play but couldn't find the back of the net. However, the offence exploded after halftime and a pep talk from head coach John Williams. Just two minutes into the second half, Abubakar Hussein delivered a beautiful setup to Jama for an easy tap-in. Shortly after, Sebastian Lopez drove to the net and delivered a perfect drop pass to Do Coito, who blasted it in to double the lead just six minutes in. Lopez and Hussein also found the back of the net, sealing the match.
In the final against the Humber Hawks, the Huskies got off to a slow start, conceding the opening goal just three minutes in. It was the first time the team trailed in both Provincials and Regionals. The Hawks maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime, but George Brown ramped up the intensity in the second half, creating numerous chances. One came when Hussein went up for a header off a cross and was punched in the head by the Hawks keeper inside the box, earning a penalty. Do Coito calmly converted the spot-kick to level the score.
Neither team managed to find the net for the rest of regulation or extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, the Huskies came up short.
