HUSKY FEATURE: NATHANAEL MASSON

HUSKY FEATURE: NATHANAEL MASSON

In his first few seasons, Nathanael Masson was the definition of a spark plug off the bench for the squad. It seemed like every time he entered the court, a bolt of energy followed. However, much has changed since the program’s last match, a crossover playoff loss on February 22nd, 2020 against the Niagara Knights. A brand-new coaching staff and numerous new players have come along. Heading into the 2022 campaign, Masson is only one of three players returning from that final match, and the fourth-year outside hitter is ready to lead this young team.

“I think the best thing I can do is lead by example and love my teammates. Everyone has different struggles and gifts, but we can all do something to get a little better every day,” Masson explained. “Also, on a more volleyball note, I am pushing all future volleyball athletes to get in the weight room as soon as possible. The OCAA is an incredibly physical league, and it is the teams that put the most work in the weight room that has found success.”

This team is led by first-year head coach and Olympian Sam Schachter. From the get-go, Masson noticed the top-notch culture and hard work the new coaching staff has brought to Huskies volleyball.

“Considering the circumstances, the adjustment has been incredibly smooth. Sam came ready to rumble with an amazing team of coaches, and their dedication to the sport and us is apparent,” Masson said. “It’s been a pleasure getting to know the new group of guys, and the few familiar faces have stood by me and helped me along.”

Masson is excited for what this season has in store for this young roster.

“I’m expecting our team to do the best with what they’ve got and to trust our amazing coaching staff. I think this is a building year, and it will help set the tone for Sam and his team to grow the Husky volleyball program,” he stated.

Academically, Masson is enrolled in the Honours Bachelor of Technology (Construction Management) program. Originally interested in engineering, one of his high school teachers suggested this as ar possible option.

“My high school shop teacher told me about the program as an alternative to engineering, which would be more focused on the construction than the design side of the industry. After researching the program and the school, I thought it was a perfect fit,” he said.

Masson loves the hands-on approach and the real-life experiences offered in the program.

“What I’ve enjoyed the most are the practical portions of my program. Getting in the lab to see how we test different building materials, my placement getting on-site experience in the industry, and solving problems in our math and science courses,” he said.

Balancing schoolwork, academics, and a part-time job is challenging, and it took time for Masson to figure out how to juggle everything effectively.

“I’d say there are three important parts to balancing everything,” he explained. “First is having a support network, family, friends, teammates. They help keep me accountable and help when I forget something. Secondly, is to plan ahead, making a list of all assignments and due dates as soon as possible to make sure I can plan around my practice and work schedules. Finally, little sleep and lots of coffee.”

Masson remains positive and has big career and personal plans after graduating from his program.

“Well, my first goal is to get my own car and build my career and myself. Then, I really look forward to getting more involved with my local church, continuing to play volleyball recreationally, and returning to coaching with my local club and giving back to the community,” he said.

During Masson’s four years at George Brown, it’s been somewhat of a rollercoaster.   Despite ups and downs from a school strike to playing with some incredible student-athletes to the COVID pandemic, Masson will always love being a Husky.

“To me being a Husky is about love and grit. We are a pack, and we can work our hardest and exceed expectations because we love what we do and the people around us. We win through trust and hard work,” he explained.
