ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Women's soccer forward Elisabeth Virelli and men's baseball pitcher Michael Guardiero have been named Huskies athletes of the week for the period ending October 18th.

The second-year forward scored the team’s most important goal in the last eight years. In the Huskies first-round crossover match against the Centennial Colts, Virelli stole the ball and fired a stunning strike over the goalkeeper in the 88th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock. The team won 2-1, which marked the program’s first crossover playoff win since they rejoined the OCAA in 2013. She also recorded a team-high three shots on goal in the victory.

In pivotal games, the first-year pitcher was stellar in both of his starts. The right-hander threw a combined 10 1/3 innings while only surrendering three earned runs off 13 hits and six walks, striking out seven. Most importantly, he won both games and put the Huskies in a position to clinch the program’s first playoff berth since 2013.

It started on Wednesday night against the East Division-leading Seneca Sting. He threw a strong 5 1/3 innings, only surrendering two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The team went on to win the game by a score of 7-2. He followed up that performance with an even better one four days later holding the Lambton Lions to one run off five hits and four walks over five innings of work in an 8-3 victory.
