The George Brown Huskies announce that Men’s Baseball head coach, AJ Wideman, will not be back in the dugout for the 2022 season. He is stepping away from the program after five seasons, four of those seasons as head coach.
“The time I have spent with GBC has been incredible. It has been such a privilege to be a part of a collegiate program. I have enjoyed every second of my time here and it has truly been first class all around. The people, facilities and environment were always fantastic. A big thank you to the entire athletic department for the time and effort each and every day! You guys make this a great place to be. I wish everyone nothing but the very best going forward!”
Wideman helped turn around the struggling program when he first came to the team in 2017 as an assistant coach. After spending a campaign as an assistant, he took over head coaching duties ahead of the 2018 season. As a result, the Huskies experienced one of their best seasons in 2021 as they qualified for the OCAA Provincial Championship for the first time since the OCAA’s inaugural men’s baseball season in 2013.
"AJ was a tremendous addition to our program when he joined us in 2017", said Manager of Athletics & Recreation Candice O’Donnell. "From day one, he helped change the program's culture and perspective. His fingerprints will be long-lasting and put us in a position to succeed moving forward. It’s unfortunate to see him step down, but we are fully supportive of his decision and look forward to him staying connected as a member of our Huskies Alumni community."
Wideman will cherish his time with the Huskies and truly appreciates the commitment from all the players over the years.
“The thing I’ll miss the most about the program is undoubtedly the people. The relationships I’ve made with the players is something I will cherish forever. I’m so thankful to each and every one of them for showing up each day, buying in and giving it everything they’ve got. The door is always open to former players and I hope they know that.”
