Women's Singles player Ellen Shen and the Women's Doubles team of Kaylee Choi & Sarah Song have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 16th.
Ellen Shen, Badminton
The second-year player captured gold in Women’s Singles at the OCAA Badminton Championships, securing a spot at the CCAA National Championships. She also played a key role in helping the team win the OCAA Women’s Team Championship banner for the first time since 2019.
Shen finished second in round-robin play with a 4-1 record. She then won a three-set thriller in the quarter-finals and followed it up with a straight-set victory in the semi-finals, setting up a final showdown against Conestoga’s Ni. After dropping the opening set, Shen stormed back to take the second, forcing a decisive third set. In a back-and-forth battle, she led 18-17 before going on a 5-0 run to secure gold.
Kaylee Choi & Sarah Song, Badminton
The duo was unbelievable, winning gold in Women’s Doubles and helping the Huskies claim the OCAA Women’s Team Championship banner at the Provincial Championships at Conestoga College. The pair qualified for the CCAA National Championships with their performance.
Choi and Song went undefeated (3-0) in round-robin play, earning a bye to the semi-finals. They won that match in straight sets, setting up a gold-medal match against Humber’s Joshi & Vasava. After Humber took the opening set, the Huskies battled back, winning the next two to claim gold, marking the second straight year the program has won gold in this discipline.
