2024-25 NOMINEES: FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The department will highlight the nominees of the Huskies major awards - Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Female Rookie of the Year, Male Rookie of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and Male Athlete of the Year - during the week leading up to the 55th Annual George Brown College Athletic Awards on Friday, April 4th at the Glenn Gould Studio.

Here are the nominees for the 2024-25 Female Rookie of the Year.

Kaylee Choi, Badminton
The first-year was extremely dominant with the Huskies. Alongside partner Sarah Song, the duo went undefeated at the Provincial Championships to claim the gold medal and Women’s Team Championship banner. On top of that, they were both named OCAA First Team All-Star. Choi and Sarah maintained their momentum at the CCAA Badminton Championships, coming away with the bronze medal, marking the second straight season the program has earned a CCAA medal in this discipline.

Sophia Gutierrez, Women’s Outdoor Soccer
The first-year midfielder was one of best all-around players during the outdoor season. She started in all 10 matches finished fourth on the team in goals and points. She played a key in the team’s defensive structure and was one of the reasons they were fifth in goals per game.

Kestia Kapanga, Women’s Basketball
The first-year forward was the perfect spark plug off the bench. She averaged 5.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and just under a steal per game, plus she was extremely efficient leading the team with a 40.8% field goal percentage. She played every single game and recorded double-digit points in four of the games. Kapanga was also the perfect example of student-athlete earning OCAA All-Academic honours.
