HUSKIES TO HOST 2022 OCAA INDOOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

HUSKIES TO HOST 2022 OCAA INDOOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The George Brown Huskies will host the 2022 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships at the Ontario Soccer Centre located in Vaughan, Ont., between March 30th and 31st.

“We are honoured to host the 2022 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships. We may be making history by hosting for the first time, but our game day operations team have a long history of putting on exceptional game experiences and this will be no different,” Manager of Athletics & Recreation Joe Stapleton explained. “We are excited to see our men’s and women’s team compete at the highest level with Huskies pride.”

The Huskies have a rich tradition of excellence in Indoor Soccer as the men’s team has won the gold medal in two of the last three championships, including the last one in 2019. The program has also claimed a medal in five straight indoor soccer championships between 2014 to 2019. Before the 2020 championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Huskies were in a great position to extend the streak as they were in the semifinals.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to play in our own championships and possibly continue this nice streak we’re currently on,” head coach Johnny Williams explained. “We’ll do our best to get to Provincials and make some noise.”

The women’s program has continued to develop and is poised to continue their success this upcoming indoor season. The team has qualified for the last three OCAA indoor soccer championships.

"It’s always exciting to host a prestigious event. With the way things have gone throughout the pandemic, I’m ecstatic that GBC is giving the athletes a platform for expression of their talent,” Women’s Soccer head coach, Leslie Fitzpatrick, explained. “It’s been draining mentally on the athletes, the coaches, the staff, and the administrators, so I’m proud our college can be a facilitator of getting the kids back onto the field and for allowing us to show that the OCAA is elite and should be recognized as such!”

The top two teams in the four pools during the OCAA Regionals (March 8-11) will qualify for Provincials Championships. The Huskies men's team will compete in Pool A on Tuesday, March 8th at Redeemer College, while the women's team will compete the next day on Wednesday, Marth 9th at the same location in Pool B.
