HUSKIES ADVANCE TO PROVINCIALS

HUSKIES ADVANCE TO PROVINCIALS

The George Brown Huskies men's indoor soccer team went undefeated while outscoring their opponents 13-0 at Regionals to advance to the OCAA Provincial Championships.

Match 1
The Huskies opened their tournament against the St. Lawrence Surge. In the opening half, the team controlled most of the possession and scored the first goal thanks to first-year forward Christian Lamana. With that marker, they went into half up 1-0. The second half was more of the same. They killed a late powerplay, and right after that first-year defender Abubakar Hussein took advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Surge in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Match 2
The rust seemed to wear off for the Huskies in the second match. After dominating possession in the Laurier (Brantford) Golden Hawks end in the opening 10 minutes, Mark-Luis Do Coito was able to find the back of the net. The Huskies would add another one off the foot of Steve Knezevic to head into halftime up 2-0. However, the team did not look back, scoring another four goals from Knezevic, Anas El-BogiErasmo Vella and Hubert Ruhindi in the second half.

Match 3
The Huskies continued their commanding play in the final match against the host, Redeemer Royals. El-Bogi set up Knezevic beautifully in the first minutes of the match to take the early lead. Later on, he and Max Jordan potted ones as well to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead at the half. In the second half, Tiago De Jesus and Do Coito added to the score to end the day undefeated.

Second-year goalie Ali Zahidi put up clean sheets in all three matches, while Knezevic posted a team-high four goals.

Head coach Johnny Williams was pleased with his team's performance but knows they need to improve in a few areas before Provincials.

"I think we started off really slow, but we got progressively better throughout the day," he explained. "I saw a lot of good things, but other things that need improvement. Even though we didn't allow a goal in the three matches, that isn't good enough for me. We just need to be a little be sharper moving forward."

UP NEXT: The team finished first in their pool and are pencilled in at the OCAA Provincial Championships, hosted by George Brown College, between March 30th-31st.
