The George Brown men's volleyball team (3-15) hosted the hosted the Algonquin Wolves (13-5) Friday (Feb 10) and the La Cite Coyotes (0-18) on Saturday (Feb 11). The Huskies would drop their match against the Wolves 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15, 25,18) but redeem themselves the following day by winning in three straight sets against the Coyotes (25-22, 25-16, 25-21), and end their regular season on a high note.
HOW IT HAPPENED – ALG: The Huskies knew they were in a for a challenge as they squared off against the third seed (OCAA East division) Algonquin Wolves. The last time these two teams played one another the Wolves took the match in three straight sets.
In the opening set, the Huskies would put pressure on the Wolves forcing them to play a more defensive set. The Wolves would go on to take the first set 25-20. In the second set, the Huskies came out playing a more balanced game which proved to benefit the home side as they would take the set 25-21 and tie the match at 1-1 entering the pivotal third set. The Wolves, however, would adjust taking the third set 25-15 entering the fourth set. In the final set, the Wolves would seal the victory taking the set 25-18 winning the match 3-1.
David Kiswa (1st Year), David Fountain (1st Year) and Joseph Lee (1st Year) would all combine for 33 points including 25 kills on 83 total attempts. Cristian Miranda Morales (1st Year) would collect 26 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED – LAC: In the second match against the Coyotes the Huskies would find their rhythm playing more to their strengths and coast to a three straight set victory 25-22, 25-16, 25-21. Once again the trio of Kiswa, Fountain and Lee would combine for 35 points including 26 kills on 52 total attempts. Arsalan Rhanama (1st Year) would pick up 32 assists in the victory.
The men's volleyball team finish their 2022-23 season with a 3-15 record. Despite the tough season, the young team is very optimistic and hopeful that next season will yield better results. Throughout this season, the team was plagued with injuries which made it challenging for them to build and sustain momentum. While the team may not be playing in the playoffs, there are a few players who are in the running to receive OCAA honours which will be announced during the 2023 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championships hosted by Fanshawe College in London Ontario from February 22-25.
