HUSKIES VARSITY WINTER SEMESTER PREVIEW

HUSKIES BADMINTON 

Nationally ranked #1 George Brown College's badminton team, closed out the Fall 2022 semester hosting the 37th Annual GBC Kim Ng Open on December 17 and 18 at the Casa Loma Athletic Centre. For a summary of the full tournament draw and results, visit the tournament Results Page
 
The Huskies will return to action January 13-14 when they travel to Centennial College for their OCAA Badminton Invitational. The tournament will serve as a refiner before the team heads to College Boreal for the East Regional on February 3 and 4. The OCAA Championships are set for February 16-18 and will be hosted by Seneca College.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Sarthak Arora (2nd Year) brought home the Bronze medal last year at the OCAA Championships. In the last four seasons, the Huskies have finished first overall as a team in both the men and women’s division.

Monique Lee (1st Year) had a strong outing at the 37th Annual GBC Kim Ng Open finishing in the quarterfinals in women’s singles play and finished in the semi-finals in women’s doubles action.

HUSKIES INDOOR MEN AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Huskies women and men's indoor soccer season will officially kick-off on Friday January 27 at the George Brown College OCAA Invitational. The tournament will serve as a warm-up to the OCAA ‘A’ Regional at the Ontario Soccer Centre on February 27 with the top two teams per region, plus the top two third place finishers based on overall record of Regional Play.

Both the women and men's teams are in Pool A, with the women competing along Conestoga, Laurier Brantford, St. Clair, and Sault College. The men against Laurier Brantford, Durham, St. Clair, and Sault College.

Both programs will fight for a chance to compete in the OCAA Championship hosted by Sheridan College from March 9-10 at the Ontario Soccer Centre. The men’s program brought home OCAA gold during their 2018-19 season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Victoria Broomer (1st Year) was instrumental for the Huskies during her inaugural outdoor season. As goalkeeper, Broomer earned three wins, three losses and two ties. Her three losses came to the top three teams in the final East Division standings. She has a save percentage of .861, placing her fifth overall in the OCAA standings and a goals-against average of 1.29.

Jason Alvarado (3rd Year) returns for another year with the Huskies men’s indoor soccer program. Alvarado bring veteran leadership along with a wealth of international experience to the pitch. He was a pivotal member of the men’s outdoor team who brought home the OCAA bronze medal in the 2022 season.


HUSKIES MEN AND WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Huskies men’s volleyball team (2-7) hopes to turn things around in the second half of their season while the women’s team (7-2) look to pick up where they left off, continuing their four-game win streak.

Both teams will play the majority of January on the road with four road games and one home game. They start the Winter 2023 playing the Seneca Sting on January 11 followed by the Canadore Panthers on January 14 before returning home on January 21 (Super Saturday) to host the Georgian Grizzlies. The teams close out the month heading to Peterborough to play the Fleming Knights on January 25, and Oshawa on January 28 to play the Durham Lords.

In February, the Huskies host the Centennial Colts on February 1 then travel to Belleville, Ontario to play the Loyalist Lancers on February 4. The weekend of February 10 and 11 the Huskies host the Algonquin Wolves and La Cite Coyotes from Ottawa, Ontario.

The OCAA Provincial Championships will be played from February 23-25 with the women’s championship hosted by Sheridan College and the men’s hosted by Fanshawe College.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jaque Ronquillo (1st Year) currently leads the entire country in points per set with 5.30 and kills per set with 4.94. Ronquillo has been a force on the court for the Huskies. The team will look to continue climbing their way up the OCAA rankings and will be back in action on January 11 as they take on the Seneca Sting at Seneca College.

David Kiswa (1st Year) has been a leader both on and off the court for men’s volleyball team. He enters the second half of the semester averaging 3.7 points per set and has accumulated 109 kills with nine games remaining in the season.

HUSKIES MEN AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

With the return of veterans Thorin Pangan (2nd Year) and Samuelle Hakh (2nd Year), the Huskies women’s basketball team (1-6) hope to turn things around with the added the leadership with the young team. The men’s team are focused heading into the second half of the season. The team entered the holiday break on a seven-game win streak. 

During the holidays both teams played in exhibition games. The men hosted College Jean-de-Brebeuf from Montreal, Quebec on December 28 winning by a final score of 105-80. The action continued as both teams hosted the Mohawk Mountaineers on January 6 and the Fanshawe Falcons on January 7. The women’s team dropped both contests 71-38 and 66-39. The men split their games dropping the first 108-106 in overtime and winning the following day 81-79.

Regular season play resumes on January 13 as the Huskies travel to Barrie, Ontario to play the Georgian Grizzlies before returning home on January 21 (Super Saturday) to host the Durham Lords. The men’s team will play host to the Fleming Knights on January 24. Both teams will end the month against the Seneca Sting on January 27.

On February 2, the teams travel to Scarborough to play the Centennial Colts before returning home to play the Loyalist Lancers on February 4. The teams will then head to the nation’s capital the weekend of February 11-12 to play the Algonquin Wolves and La Cite Coyotes (men’s team only) before closing out the regular season at home against the St. Lawrence Surge on February 17.

The OCAA Provincial Championships will be played from March 3-5 with the men’s championship hosted by St. Clair College and the women’s hosted by Niagara College.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jordyn Dawkins (1st Year) continues to work hard on and off the court for the women’s basketball team. Dawkins is currently averaging 16.4 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Huskies will open the second half of the season on the road against the Georgian Grizzlies on Friday January 13.

Jacob Masters (2nd Year) has been consistent during the first half of the season averaging 10.8 points per game and is currently shooting 34.8% from the three-point line along with 60% from the free-throw line. The team will enter Fridays game against the Grizzlies on a seven game win streak.

 

HUSKIES E-SPORTS

The Huskies E-sports team finished the Fall semester with a 4-3 record after competing in League of Legends gameplay. Despite getting off to a rough start, dropping the first three contests, putting the team mathematically out of playoff contention, the team managed to turn things around and win the remaining games ending the year very confidently, knowing that the extra time spent practicing paid off in the end.
